Wave selection
« on: February 04, 2015, 09:05:54 PM »
I just read the registration process and it appears to have changed. Since the web page has changes so much I wasn't sure if it had changed or not. Anyway, it seems like for the Ascent, people will register and then be assigned to waves based upon their qualifying times. Does anyone know how this will work? Will it still be based on 4:15? Or perhaps it will be based upon the times of the 1800 runners and just put the top half in the first wave and the lower half in the second wave? Curious. I'm an old dog and this new trick has me asking questions  :)

See my reply to a similar question this post.

As you guessed, folks will register and we will assign starting waves based on their qualification time. Exactly which times will get you into which wave will depend on who signs up. Also note that there may be more than two waves. The initial crowding along the first few miles of the trail is one of the largest grumblings that I've heard over the past few years and hopefully some of that will be addressed by reworking the start procedures. The other complaint is how slow folks go at the top due to a lack of oxygen, but then we can't do much about that. :-)

Thanks John! This makes a heck of a lot of sense. It was always a mystery to me why it was done rigidly at the 4:15 mark without knowing what qualifying times you would actually get. It also made registration more complicated than it needed to be. It will be interesting to see what it does to the crowding at the bottom. I grumble about one slow person at the top almost each year. ME!  And I CAN do something about that, starting NOW!  :)
