It seems that active.com likes to report the number of times the page has been viewed as the number of folks "watching" the event. The number was totally bogus and there was not a single thing I could do about it. I thought that it added unnecessary stress to what was already a stressful time for most registrants. This will be fixed for next year.
The stats I have that I trust are the ones I collected via Google Analytics and the registration data itself. On the website, we had about 250 folks active on the PPM website just before noon when the marathon opened. At 12:30 we had about 500 active folks when the ascent registration opened. ("Active" being unique visitors who visited within the last 60 seconds.) From the registration data, I know that for the PPA, we had 235 folks register in the first 5 minutes, 681 after 10, and 1210 after 40 minutes. The PPM was proportionately a bit faster: 421 after 10, 737 after 70.
