Road Conditions on the PP Highway
« on: August 16, 2016, 12:03:50 PM »
Last Weds (10 Aug), I drove to the top of PP.  I reached the toll gate at about 8am and the attendant said the last mile of the road was closed due to icing.  She let me through.  Near the top there were about 12 vehicles waiting in line.  Less than 5 minutes after I stopped they opened the road.  The golden stairs were covered with a layer of ice that made walking down very treacherous.
I mention this because of the possibility of snow on Friday night and the same conditions existing on the morning of the PPA. The black surface of the road absorbs the heat from the sun and the thermal mass of the roadbed retains the heat causing the snowfall to melt and freeze.  Hopefully, the race coordinators are discussing this possibility with the PP Highway folks so that the road could be sanded or salted that would allow the race personnel to be in place to avoid race delays.
